Heatwave in India: Hill destinations that are unusually hot this year
We live in times when the hills are no longer our cool retreats. This is true for some of the hill stations. The hill destinations in states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are experiencing unusually hot summers; we remember them being cold retreats. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 43.1°C and Mussoorie 43°C. Himachal Pradesh saw temperatures rise to 44°C, 6.7 degrees above average. In Jammu and Kashmir, Katra hit 40.8°C, while Jammu reached 44.3°C.
Mussoorie, Uttarakhand
Mussoorie is a picturesque hill station nestled in the Garhwal Himalayan range in Uttarakhand. Known for its colonial charm, stunning vistas of snow-capped peaks, and lush green hills, Mussoorie attracts tourists with landmarks like the Mall Road, Kempty Falls, and Gun Hill. However, this year, Mussoorie has seen an unusual rise in temperatures (43 degrees Celsius), affecting its cool, pleasant climate and altering the local ecosystem.
Nainital, Uttarakhand
Nainital is known for its emerald-green Naini Lake, surrounded by majestic mountains and lush forests. With attractions like the Naina Devi Temple, Snow View Point, and vibrant markets, Nainital has been a favorite summer retreat. Unfortunately, it is now experiencing higher-than-normal temperatures, which is impacting its flora, fauna, and the overall visitor experience.
Katra, Jammu
Katra is a small town in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu, famous as the base camp for the pilgrimage to the holy Vaishno Devi Temple. This serene town offers scenic beauty and spiritual solace. Katra is facing unusual temperature spikes, which are affecting the pilgrimage experience and the local environment. 40 degrees is quite an anomaly for Katra.
Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
Kangra is a picturesque district in Himachal Pradesh, known for its stunning landscapes, ancient temples, and tea gardens. Attractions like the Kangra Fort and Masroor Rock Cut Temple draw history and nature enthusiasts alike. Despite its usually moderate climate, Kangra is now witnessing unusual temperature increases, posing a threat to its rich biodiversity and agricultural practices.
Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
Mandi, situated in Himachal Pradesh, is known as the Varanasi of the Hills due to its multitude of ancient temples and serene riverside setting. This charming town is also a gateway to the higher Himalayas. Mandi is experiencing a rise in temperatures, disrupting its temperate climate and affecting the local way of life and natural surroundings.
Kullu, Himachal Pradesh
Kullu is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant culture, and adventure sports. The town serves as a base for treks to Manali and beyond.
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is one of India's most famous hill stations. Known for its colonial architecture, bustling Mall Road, and scenic viewpoints, Shimla has long been a summer getaway. However, it is now facing unusually high temperatures, which are altering its cool, pleasant climate and causing concerns for residents and visitors alike.
Chamba, Himachal PradeshChamba is famous for its ancient temples, palaces, and the annual Minjar Festival. Nestled amidst lush green valleys, Chamba offers a serene retreat for history and nature lovers.
