Koh Kret

Did you know Bangkok is so big that it actually has its own island? Going towards the Nonthaburi district you’ll find the island of Koh Kret in the middle of Chao Praya River. Created when a canal was dug nearly 300 years ago, the island is home to a community of indigenous Mon people―one of the first groups in Thailand―known for their traditional customs and handmade pottery. The island is a popular weekend day trip for Bangkokians who head out on the local ferry or chartered longtail boats to spend the afternoon at the bustling weekend market particularly known for its array of edible Thai treats and delicacies. Here you’ll find a seemingly never ending assortments of Mon specialties, like deep fried flower blossoms and an unusual dish of rose-scented iced rice with various toppings, along with traditional Thai sweets. Don’t miss the active pottery workshops where you can watch skilled craftsmen throw pots in just a few minutes or buy some intricately designed souvenirs to take home for yourself. Also take time to explore the rest of the island outside of the market that has a surprisingly rural feel just kilometers away from the big city.
