Located about 15 km North of Mysore, Balmuri falls is a small waterfall but makes up with its length and beauty. Surrounded by greenery, the fall is actually caused through a shallow check dam built on the river Cauvery for irrigation purposes. Once the dam fills, the water overflows as a fall. When the flow is not too vigorous, it is possible to wade through the water on the dam but it could get dangerous when the water flow is brisk. A better idea is to splash around in the pools and the streams as it flows down through rocks and shrubbery. The banks also have nice shady areas for picnics. While it is largely safe, it is a good idea to stay in the shallow areas and in groups. There are also local boatmen who offer coracle rides on the water.
