A beautiful temple constructed in Dravidian style architecture, Koodal Azhagar Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu. The temple is located near the Periyar bus stand, and also the Madurai Railway Station. Koodal is another name for Madurai, whule Azhaghar translated to “the beautiful one.” The ancient temple is one of the 108 holy abodes of Lord Vishnu and is thereby much revered by Hindus of India and abroad. The temple saw an expansion of its premises during the Nayak rule in the 16th Century, and is today maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The temple is also known to have the nine planetary deities, and is regularly visited by devotees from across India. The temple rituals are conducted six times a day, so you could find yourself in the midst of one such ritual during your visit.
