Kufri turns into a winter wonderland after receiving the first snowfall of the year!

Kufri, a beautiful hill station, in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh has transformed into a winter wonderland after receiving the first spell of snowfall. The town experienced snowfall, which only lasted for a few minutes but it was impactful. It happened because a Western Disturbance passed through the region resulting in brief snowfall.

Given the current weather patterns, the Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are going through a winter season defined by an unusual lack of snowfall and relatively warm temperatures. This departure from the norm is particularly noticeable in the famous tourist places and high-altitude regions of these states.

A video of snowfall went viral on social media on Saturday. The video showed the ephemeral snowfall in Kufri turning the hill station all white and beautiful. The snowfall in the Himalayan region is mostly influenced by Western Disturbances (WDs), because of low-pressure systems that usher in moisture-laden winds from the Mediterranean region.

However, this winter has seen a noticeable dip in frequent WDs, leading to predominantly dry and clear weather conditions in northwest India. The meteorological department in Shimla has also predicted a spell of wet weather for Himachal Pradesh on January 9 and 10, with potential rainfall and snowfall in different regions of the state.


There has been a noticeable decrease in minimum temperatures, with Kusumseri, Sumdo, Kalpa, and Narkanda registering lows of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, and minus 2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Meanwhile, Kufri reported a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. These temperature readings reflect the current cold spell in the mentioned locations.


Night temperatures are around the freezing point at various locations. Notably, Reckong Peo experienced a chilling temperature of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Seobag at 0.8 degrees Celsius, Bhuntar also at 0.8 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar at 0.9 degrees Celsius, while Solan and Mandi recorded temperatures of 1.1 degrees Celsius each. Shimla reported a relatively milder temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius.
