The temple complex is one of the most impressive religious structures in the world and is known not only for its impressive architecture, but also for its cultural and spiritual significance.
The main temple is built in three tiers and houses intricately carved relief panels and stupas, forming a pyramidal structure. The three tiers consist of a base, the middle terraces, and the upper platforms. If you look closely around the base of the temple complex, you will find bas reliefs depicting stories from everyday life, Buddhist teachings and Jataka Tales.
It is said that the Borobudur Temple complex was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The temple was constructed using volcanic stone blocks without the use of any mortar, showcasing the excellent workmanship of the ancient Javanese artisans. The intricate carvings on the temple walls are pretty impressive too.
