Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undoubtedly the quaintest part of Bergen. In fact, it used to be one of the very famous urban areas of Norway in middle ages. The very first buildings in Bergen were built alongside Bryggen only. While strolling through its alleys, you can make out how Norway used to be like in the 12th century. Bryggen has been burnt to ashes multiple times, especially by the great fire in 1702. Hence, the whole area has been rebuilt again and again, but on the foundations that had been there since 12th century. It's the reason behind the almost unchanged architecture of Bryggen for a couple of centuries. Being a wharf area, the walk is breathtaking from the port area to the end of the Bryggen. On the left side, you have a gorgeous castle, cathedral, small mountains and beautiful wooden buildings and the right side catches the attention of walker with big ships, ferries and small boats. The rows of those multicoloured authentic wooden houses (left side) of same shape and size are bound to steal your heart at first sight. Now, some of these have been converted to shops, restaurants, cafes or museums. You can also enter some traditional jewelry workshops, woolen shops, souvenir houses and food places.
