Mumbai smog – Mumbai’s air quality worsens as city wakes up to a haze

Mumbai pollution levels are rising as the skyline looks hazy. The city experienced a smoggy morning, as residents complained of burning eyes and breathing problems.
It has been reported that Bandra experienced the worst pollution level, as its Particulate Matter (PM) 10 stood at 405 in the morning. This is considered to be a severe condition, according to Air Quality Index. 400 PM10 levels can affect people seriously and cause respiratory issues.

The high pollution level has been caused due to stagnant winds, cloud cover and high humidity in the last 48 hours, according to the Meteorological department. It has been suggested that the condition of smog in Mumbai could improve tomorrow.

“There is a western disturbance which is pulling in a lot of moisture, but as the sun comes up, heat would reduce moisture and pollution levels, thereby improving air quality," said officials from System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

Delhi had also faced high pollution levels recently, and experts even suggest that the problem persists. The past few months saw Delhi’s AQI quality among poor, very poor, severe and severe plus. It was found that the lung functionality of Delhi’s children and adults were lesser in comparison to their European counterparts.

The Supreme Court had also suggested that the Centre should go beyond Delhi and work on this, as this problem has been consistently affecting Uttar Pradesh, Raipur and Patna as well.
