Yet another unique experience in the city of Kolkata is a visit to the ancestral home of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Located on Elgin Road, this house was built by his father Janakinath Bose in 1909. A nerve centre of political activities back then, this house was an integral part of the life of the leader. Subhash Chandra Bose spent the formative years of his life here and also lived here during the major part of the freedom struggle. Maintained by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Netaji Bhawan is also the centre of the Netaji Research Bureau. Today, the house has a well-stocked museum and library that showcases the life of Netaji. Set up in 1961, this museum houses belongings of Netaji and occupies an important place in the Indian history. Impeccably-maintained and retaining the old feel 1940 look, the bedrooms and study of Netaji have been retained as it was. The staircase as well as the car that was used by the leader to escape to Berlin during his house arrest has been preserved remarkably. A typical Bengali household—replete with pillars and a courtyard—the house has a priceless collection of photographs, documents and articles associated with Netaji.
