There are a number of beautiful and oversized urban parks in Bucharest, which are much needed to balance the grey communist residential neighbourhoods. The common aspects that link many of them are the presence of water bodies and their impressive sizes. They are evenly distributed around the city so that every citizen has a green escape located at a convenient distance. In many of the parks, it's even possible to rent bicycles at reasonable prices if not for free.
Our personal favourite is the Cismigiu Park, in the centre of the city, next to Piata Universitate. It is considered to be the oldest park in Bucharest and a historical monument to be preserved. Its tranquil walkways are decorated with long lines of baroque benches where locals gather on sunny days to relax and enjoy the quietness. Its lake is crossed by several bridges of organic inspiration, and a suspended restaurant stands in the middle of the water. Furthermore, Cismigiu Park transforms into a public icing skate track during winters.
On the other end of the spectrum stands Drumul Taberei Park, an unexpected surprise far away from where tourists usually roam. If you happen to be in the west suburbs of Bucharest don't miss this recently restored park, undoubtedly the most modern green space in Bucharest and also the most stunning. Besides, Herastrau Park, which is one of the largest and most loved parks in Bucharest, includes the Village Museum that it's worth visiting.
