Bajrakli Mosque is one of the only surviving mosques in Belgrade. Built originally in 1575 during the Ottoman Empire, Bajrakli Mosque is a fine example of Turkish Islamic architecture. At the beginning of 15th century, there were more than 200 mosques in Serbia. During the Austro- Hungarian Empire, many were converted into Roman Catholic Churches, and some were burnt down in protest. As the name suggests, Bajrakli – Flag bearing, a flag on top of Bajrakli Mosque marked the beginning of prayers in all the remaining mosques across Belgrade. The current facade of Bajrakli Mosque dates back to the 17th century, and portrays classic Ottoman architecture with octagonal dome supported by massive walls. The stone structure carrying small windows and doors portrays modest interiors with a shallow niche, and elaborate vault decoration. The mosque serves as an Islamic Cultural centre for Muslims in Serbia. The unassuming structure of Bajrakli Mosque is worth a visit for the historical endurance it has sustained over the centuries. It still stands tall in a Christian dominated society living its past glory.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
