A small group of beautiful, coral-fringed islands off the coast of north-eastern Malayisa, the Perhentians are a tropical paradise with crystal clear waters and white sand. During the day, the white sand is dotted with sun-loving holiday makers, while at night, the beaches come alive with bonfires and kerosene lamps. The Perhentian Islands are essentially two islands named Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island) and Pulau Perhentian Besar (Large Perhentian Island). The Malay name Perhentian literally translates to mean ‘a place to stop’ and this is exactly what these two islands were for traders travelling between Malaysia and Bangkok.
