India has several captivating islands, each with its unique charm and significance. Some of these islands are out in the sea, and some formed by the rivers. Wherever they may be, they offer interesting experiences, a lot different from what we get in the mainland.
What’s special about Indian islands is that, whether it's the vibrant marine life of the Andamans and Lakshadweep, or the traditional charm of river islands like Majuli and Munroe Islands, these islands provide travellers unique travel and cultural experiences. This Republic Day long-weekend, if you are thinking about doing something unique, we suggest you check out some of the Indian islands.
Majuli, Assam
Majuli, the largest river island in the world, is Assam’s pride and joy. Surrounded by the waters of Brahmaputra River, Majuli Island is known for its vibrant culture and unique Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries.
Shivanasamudra Islands, Karnataka
This river island is located in the Cauvery River, close to the Shivanasamudra waterfalls. For those who are looking for a holiday in the midst of nature, these islands are great as they offer breathtaking views of the waterfalls and lush forests.
Divar Island, Goa
If you are planning a Goa holiday, we suggest you give Divar Island a chance. The island lies on the Mandovi river in Goa, and is a short ferry ride away from Old Goa. Divar is a breath of fresh air as it is very different from the usual ‘Goa experiences’ we all know about. Divar Island is beyond beaches, cafes and parties.
Netrani Island, Karnataka
Located off the coast of Karnataka, Netrani Island is one of the best places to give water adventure a chance. The waters surrounding Netrani Island are perfect for scuba diving and other water sports.
Munroe Island, Kerala
Munroe Islands in Kollam district is made up of several small islets, and is one of the best backwater destinations in Kerala. Area-wise, Munroe Island may be small, just covering 13.4 sq km, but the region is a favourite among tourists.
Pamban Island, Tamil Nadu
Also known as Rameswaram Island, Pamban is one of the most sought-after destinations in south India, especially among religious travellers. Apart from temples and historic places, Pamban is also home to the ghost town of Dhanuskodi, a deserted yet picture-perfect destination.
Diu Island, Gujarat
Located off the southern coast of Kathiawar, Diu is most popular for its pristine white sand beaches, Portuguese architecture and Naida caves. This Union Territory is great for those who are in love with history.
Willingdon Island, Kerala
This artificial island in Kochi is also the largest one of its kind in India. Willingdon Island can be reached from the mainland Kochi via ferries.
Elephanta Island, Maharashtra
A short ferry-ride away from the Mumbai Harbour is the enigmatic Elephanta Island, home to the famous Elephanta Caves. These caves are also one of the most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.
Kavvayi Islands, Kerala
Spread across the districts of Kannur and Kasaragod, Kavvayi Islands is one of the largest backwaters destinations in Kerala. Several small and large islands make up Kavvayi Islands.
