Islamic Cairo is a historical old centre of Cairo and the original city founded in 10th century. This is one of the world’s oldest Islamic city centres, hosting mosques, madrasas, hammams and squares. One can find Byzantine, Ottoman, Arabic and Persian influences in this small area tucked inside an old quarter. Some of the important Islamic monuments worth visiting include Mosque of Ibn Tulun, Al-Azhar Mosque, Midan Salah ad-Din, Al-Hakim Mosque and Qalawun Complex. Bayt Al-Suhaymi is a quiet Ottoman merchant house tucked within the historical Islamic structures. Famous Khan El Khalili bazaar is located next to Qalawun Complex. Islamic Cairo is in stark contrast with Christian Cairo. After the tranquil stroll around Coptic Cairo, be prepared to pass by the narrow lanes of Islamic Cairo where locals sell bread and chicken. Men and women are advised to dress conservatively so that entrance to most of these monuments is guaranteed.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
