Sakkara Pyramids are the oldest pyramids of Djoser that are not large pyramids but are worth visiting for their architectural uniqueness. Pyramids at Saqqara, also known as step pyramid, are smaller in size and are distinctively different in their appearance. Among these the Pyramid of Djoser is the most famous one. The stepped pyramids of Saqqara are much older than the ones in Giza. Standing in isolation, in the middle of the desert, these step pyramids were the precursor to the larger ones built much later. The mortuary complex at Saqqara contains many other structures including surrounding walls, trenches and roofed colonnade corridor, which is still standing. The step pyramid has 6 steps and contains the burial chamber inside one of the vaults. Pyramids were more than just graveyards, they were meant to facilitate the smooth transition of life from this life to the next. The chamber walls are intricately carved with hieroglyphics depicting rituals to be carried out in the afterlife. A drive through the desert to Saqqara takes one hour which is worth it.
