Sintra Royal Palace

Located 40 km west of Lisbon, Palácio Nacional De Sintra (Sintra National Palace) used to be a summer residence of the Portuguese kings. Moor place existed on the same site since 10th century. Current structure was built in 1385 by King John I, the palace was occupied by Portuguese royalty till late 19th century. Massive conical chimneys are the most striking feature of Sintra Royal Palace, which can be spotted from far while approaching Sintra. Much of the structure built during King John I reign is still there, including the Swan Room (magnificent ceiling decorated with swans), Magpie Room (136 magpie holding a rose adorn the walls) and the Arab Room. While John’s Wing contains some of the oldest parts of the palace, Manueline wing created during the 16th century dominates with Islamic artistic influence known as Mudéjar style. The royal rooms decorated with eye-catching azulejos - ceramic tiles are worth exploring. Typical manueline windows grace the external main facade of the wing.
