Halasuru Someshwara Temple

The cantonment area of Bangalore dates its fame back to the times of the British Raj. The areas of Ulsoor, Frazer town, Coxs town all were well within this cantonment area and very popular even to this day. A huge portion of the old Bangalore crowd still resides here. The residents here are especially lucky since some of the temples of the bygone era are present here for them to witness and cherish. One such temple is that of the Someshwara Temple of Ulsoor. The temple is the holy abode of the Lord Someshwara. The temple upholds the style of the Vijayanagara dynasty. However, some believe it was built by the Cholas. The temple has a huge pillar (Khamba), a beautiful gopuram and a big mantapa. One can find many sculptures of Hindu gods and goddess in the temple complex, especially on the tower near the entrance.

Forty-eight pillars hold this temple erect, with each adorning beautiful carvings of divinities. There is a Navagraha Temple too in this complex which consists of twelve sages/rishis. The temple is surrounded by the elements of today’s world—commercial complexes, apartments, shopping areas and not to forget the very many traffic bottlenecks. So, when you plan to visit this temple, give preference to the austerity and divinity of the temple and not the inevitable of the modern world!
