The gateway to the Bernese Oberland region, Thun is a historic city located on the fringes of the lake of the same name. With a small population of 43,000, it is a popular tourist destination in Switzerland and an easy day trip from Bern. Thun’s Old Town, with its charming elevated pavements, is entrenched in history and is home to a magnificent 12th century castle that was constructed by the Dukes of Zähringen. The Kunstmuseum is an equally important sight in the historic centre and plays host to contemporary Swiss art by celebrated names like Mark Grotjahn, Christoph Büchel and Gianni Motti. There is also an impressive church, a 16th century town hall and the Schadau Park to explore and activities like sailing and surfing to indulge in.
Thun is located on the outskirts of the Bern Metropolitan Area and frequent S-Bahn trains from the capital will get you to this charming town. The journey is around 30 min long and tickets should come for approximately 16 CHF. Swiss Travel Pass owners can take this ride for free.
