What’s it like to visit India’s largest national park?
Nestled in the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh, Hemis National Park is India's largest national park and a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts, trekkers, and nature lovers. Spread across 4,400 square kilometers, this vast expanse is renowned for its rugged landscapes, ancient monasteries, and elusive snow leopards. Here’s what you can expect when visiting this breathtaking wilderness.
Stunning landscapes
Hemis National Park offers a dramatic mix of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and windswept plateaus. Located at altitudes ranging from 3,300 to 6,000 meters, the terrain is harsh yet incredibly scenic. The stark beauty of the Ladakhi Himalayas is at its best here.
Elusive snow leopard and other wildlife
Hemis is often called the "Snow Leopard Capital of India", as it has one of the highest densities of this rare big cat. The best time to spot them is during winter (November to March) when they descend to lower altitudes in search of food. Apart from snow leopards, the park is home to Tibetan wolves, red foxes, Himalayan marmots, bharal (blue sheep), and Asiatic ibex. Hemis is home to species like the golden eagle, Himalayan griffon vulture, and lammergeier
Trekking through the park
Hemis is a haven for trekkers, with trails ranging from easy to highly challenging. Some of the popular treks include Markha Valley Trek, Rumbak Valley Trek (ideal for snow leopard spotting), and Stok Kangri Trek. Trekking here is not for the faint-hearted, as the thin air and freezing temperatures can be challenging.
Spiritual and cultural significance
The park is home to the famous Hemis Monastery, one of the richest and most significant Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. The Hemis Festival, held every June or July, is a major attraction where monks perform masked dances to commemorate Guru Padmasambhava.
Best time to visit
For snow leopards, winter (November to March) is the best time, but it’s freezing. For trekking and sightseeing, summer (June to September) is ideal when the weather is more comfortable.
