You need to visit these famous ghost towns in India
We all love a good story when we travel. What better than ghost towns? For those curious, ghost towns are abandoned or semi-abandoned settlements that were once vibrant and populated but are now deserted. Though it says ‘ghost’, these towns do not necessarily have something to do with the paranormal.
These towns often have a rich history, reflecting a bygone era of economic activity, cultural significance, or a specific event that led to their abandonment. There’s that melancholic and eerie atmosphere as they stand frozen in time, preserving remnants of their former glory. And that is what draws visitors in.
Here are some of the best in India.
Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu
Dhanushkodi, located on the southern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, was a thriving town until it was devastated by a cyclone in 1964. The remnants of the town, including dilapidated buildings and a railway station, stand as a haunting reminder of the tragedy.
Lakhpat, Gujarat
Lakhpat was once a bustling port city and a center of trade. However, due to changes in the course of the Indus River and subsequent earthquakes, the town was gradually abandoned. The ruins of Lakhpat's walls, houses, and temples now stand as a testament to its past glory.
Ross Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Ross Island, located near Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was once the administrative headquarters of the British during colonial times. However, it was abandoned sometime between 1945-46. Today, tourists can explore the remnants of British architecture and ruins covered in vegetation.
Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th century. It was abandoned shortly after its construction due to a scarcity of water. The deserted city showcases stunning architectural marvels, including the Buland Darwaza and Jama Masjid.
