Come Sunday and you can expect the street that happens to house the very famous Billey Di Hatti to become completely non-motorable. Right from 9 am onwards residents of Kamla Nagar and way beyond, head out on a mission to get their share of hot chholey puri halwa with some chilled creamy lassi from this age-old favourite joint. The large terracotta urns that are filled with fresh curd line up an entire wall behind the billing counter only to be emptied out one after another after being churned into light and frothy lassi and poured out into glasses. And if you happen to be one of the privileged few who don't have to mind their calories, you could request for a special scoop of thick malai or milk fat to be layered onto your glass.
Meanwhile, a busy team of cooks are scooping up one puri after another from a huge kadai filled with piping hot oil. This will be served with chholey and sooji halwa that has been prepared in the wee hours of the morning and some spicy slices of onion rings. Since the shop is never big enough to accommodate all those who have lined up for their Sunday brunch, a section of the road outside the shop will soon be transformed into a tiny eatery with small round tables where visitors can enjoy their food albeit hurriedly and then leave, satiated and happy. If you don't like the wait, opt for any other day of the week. The shop is open from 9 am to 7 pm with the exception of Mondays when the Kamla Nagar market is closed.
