Killmeyer's Old Bavaria Inn

History runs deep here—a part of the building is said to date back to the early 1700s. Nicolas Killmeyer bought the property in 1859; about 30 years later, the original building was expanded, the upstairs was converted to a hotel and a gorgeous mahogany bar was built. So even though the current owners took it over in 1995, there's a great sense of nostalgia built into this Staten Island hofbräuhaus. And the festive atmosphere—with wood details, steins galore and a tin ceiling—spills outside into the beer garden, where bands perform on weekend evenings from May to October. More than 80 beers, like Warsteiner Dunkel or Dr. Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weisse, see to it that patrons' thirsts are slaked. Dishes like the terrific wurst platter—with bratwurst, knockwurst and Weisswurst plumply sitting on a plate with red cabbage and sauerkraut—or the crisp potato pancakes and the live Oompah band on Sundays especially add to the Bavarian spirit.
