Located in Chiang Mai’s trendy Nimmanhaemin neighbourhood, Lab Kai Nimman’s simple but charming interior provides the perfect backdrop for its simple, but delicious food. Featuring common northern Thai dishes such as different chili dips served with pork rinds and blanched vegetables, the restaurant also offers a few more complicated dishes such as young jack fruit curry, northern-style tom yum with frog, and khanom jeen (white fermented rice noodles) served with a spicy curry sauce and smattering of toppings. Northern Thais love their different sausages, including naem and sai oua, and you can get both here prepared a number of ways including mixed into fried rice or simply sliced and served with fresh bird’s eye chilies, peanuts, cilantro, ginger and shallots—put a little of each on your spoon and eat it all in one bite for a mouthful of contrasting and complementing flavours! While the restaurant is in an area known for its higher prices, these dishes won’t set you back and are meant to be shared so order several to go around. Don’t forget to wash it all down with an ice cold Singha or, for the more health-conscious, a traditional herbal juice, such as butterfly pea or roselle juice.
