Undoubtedly the most expensive place on this list of budget friendly, family owned eateries in Thamel, Momotarou is nonetheless impressive because it is high class food at a relatively low class price. The menu is a combination of Japanese, Chinese and Tharu cuisine, but focuses primarily on Japanese food, which we all know is not cheap. The Tharu people are an ethnic group from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. The owner is Tharu and after spending time in Japan, he fell in love with the cuisine there. Upon returning to Nepal he opened Momotarou.
The food tastes so authentic that you would have no idea the owner doesn’t have any Japanese ancestry. Another positive sign is there are always Japanese travellers here and if they are enjoying their native cuisine with such enthusiasm then you know it’s good! Sushi, tempura, ramen and udan, donburi, bento boxes and more, Momotarou has it all!
Best Bet? Spicy pork ramen. Sure, it will set you back nearly Rs 400. But you will be so satisfied on the walk back to your hotel that you won’t care.
