Iain, the receptionist at the Bonham Hotel, told me that his father was born in his workplace. As was his aunt. Situated in the West End of Edinburgh, the hotel used to be a maternity hospital and the bar is still called The Consulting Room. ‘Bonham babies’ regularly return to their birthplace, as do former students. The hotel is also a former hall of residence for the Edinburgh University. Today, it has 49 boutique rooms and suites with facilities such as pre-monsoon drench showers, plasma screen TVs, complimentary parking and international laundry service (£2.20 for brassiere/bustenhalter and same day dry cleaning and pressing). All the food on the menu is sourced locally and the full Scottish breakfast is the best in town. Try the Moscow Mule cocktail and sloe and elderflower Prosecco Kir or the Japanese cherry loose leaf tea.
