At the charming and old world Arnaud’s restaurant on Bienville Street, it is the Creole food that rules the roost, but almost equally popular is the French 75 Bar. With a history going back nearly 100 years, the place debuted as a gentlemen’s only place, but changed its entry rules. And it is really popular for its eponymous cocktail. Though some versions of the cocktail French 75 use gin, cognac is the overriding favourite owing to its French origins, which is in keeping with the history of New Orleans. Invented sometime around the 1940-50s, French 75, also called Arnaud’s Special Cocktail, is made with cognac, lemon juice, champagne, sugar, and is at once fizzy, piquant and textural on the palate.
