Whether you’re looking for a hearty western-style meal, need a break from watery Chang and want a Guinness on tap, or wanting to go up against long term expats at the weekly trivia night―U.N. Irish Pub and Restaurant on Rathvithi Road close to Tha Pae Gate is for you. This is one of the best places in town to sink your teeth into a juicy burger, traditional shepherd’s pie or, on special occasions, even corned beef, while drinking fresh pints of Guinness. In the centre of the main backpacker and guesthouse area, you’ll find a mix of travellers and western expats here indulging in the dishes they miss from home and catching up with their favourite sports team (the bar has a sign outside listing what matches they’re playing on the TV throughout the week). You can also buy fresh bread from the restaurant’s Crusty Loaf Bakery to go or gather up a team play in the weekly Thursday trivia night with questions on current events, history, movies, pop culture, geography, sports and more. The bar and restaurant will also hold special meals for western holidays like Christmas and, of course, St. Patrick’s Day.
