The strategic location of Belgrade on the confluence of Rivers Sava and Danube has attracted many crusaders. The series of invaders and crusaders of Serbia built underground tunnels, canals, storage rooms, secret passageways, and bunkers during their reign under the city of Belgrade. The 2000 years of history of Belgrade has seen occupation by Celtic, Roman, Byzantine, Hungarian, Austrian, Turkish, and Germans. All of them created underground secret networks through channels and tunnels. The secrets of these empires are buried under the ground since time immemorial. Occasional digging in the old town has revealed the treasures previously unknown to the world. The tunnels were used by the Germans until 1944. Astonishingly in the recent times, digging any part of the old quarter reveals something new, a Roman aqueduct or wine store rooms, Austrian gunpowder storehouse, or German command post. Take an underground tour and explore Belgrade’s fascinating past. It is exciting and creepy to stroll through these tunnels, canals and caves, and learn the secrets of the city.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
