Drink Pisco Sour

Pisco Sour isn’t just a drink in Peru—it’s a veritable right of passage. Unsurprisingly then, most tourists are curious about Pisco Sour and end up sampling it on their first day in Cusco. The name ‘Pisco Sour’ comes from the South American spirit called Pisco, which is the base spirit of this cocktail. Peruvians add a series of ingredients including bitters, limejuice, sugar, and egg white to it and garnish with a slice of lime. Despite the standard list of ingredients, the cocktail tastes different at every single restaurant.
The origin of Pisco Sour is a huge bone of contention between Chile and Peru. Chileans love to claim the popular drink as their own but Peruvians will have none of it. Most Peruvians we met on our travels boasted of Pisco Sour being a stoutly Peruvian cocktail. If you are in Peru, make sure you drop by Gran Hotel Bolivar in Lima, which was allegedly one of Hemingway’s favourite places to go to for a Pisco Sour.
