If you are a lover of outdoor activities, then you must include Maidan—the largest urban park in the city, in your itinerary. Developed in the 18th century by the British as their parade ground, today Maidan is one of the most prominent landmarks of Kolkata and is often referred to as the city’s respiratory system. Since its development the Maidan has been an army property and continues to be so. Surrounded by a host of renowned structures, Maidan attracts a lot of visitors throughout the year. Maidan is an ideal place where political meetings are often held. Various trade fairs, exhibitions including the famous Kolkata Book Fair are hosted here. (Kolkata Book Fair is held at Milan Mela near Science City since 2009).Take a walk around the park with your significant other or simply read your favourite classic. Or you could catch a panoramic view of the city, watch locals play cricket and football (you can also be a part of it) and opt for a tram ride or a joy ride at a horse-drawn carriage circling the park. A few hours spent at the Maidan will complete your itinerary of Kolkata. It has has its own metro station, so reaching here is not a challenge.
