In 1871 Chicago literally burned down. A cow kicked an oil lamp, things got out of control, and Chicago was on fire for three days. Deciding that maybe wood wasn’t the best material to construct a city, architects started working on using steel construction and glass to create much larger and actually fire-repellant buildings, thus the skyscraper. A result of this was that a unique history of architectural innovation was born in Chicago. Its skyline now ranks as one of the best in the world, and few of its buildings are older than 1871.
