A rather ostentatious metropolis with its high-rises, neon lights, intimidating crowds and entertainment centres, Osaka is the place to go to for all consumerist fetishists. Easily the best place to indulge in some high-end shopping in Japan, Osaka has the best malls and arcades that could give the ones in Tokyo and Kyoto a run for their money.
That said, despite its material pleasures, the city continue to be modest. The omnipresence of luxury does not mean that cheap buys aren’t available here. Street shops, thrift stores, and 100 Yen chains can be found in abundance in Osaka, and they all sell products that flawlessly encapsulate the quirky lifestyle of the urban Japanese. There are an overwhelming number of retail options in the city and narrowing the list down to ten can be a difficult job.
