Located in the once thriving music neighbourhood of Treme behind the Louis Armstrong Park, which has undergone a vast change since Hurricane Katrina, Candlelight Lounge is among the old-world jazz bars. Built in plain cinder-block, there’s been no effort to gentrify it. The stage is just one end of the bar with chairs set in a row. The place is especially popular on Wednesdays when the famous Treme Brass Band, an eight-piece band performs a variety of famous numbers. The bar’s menu extends to just beer and a small list of simple cocktails, but it is among the few places that still offers a ‘set up,’ an old DIY tradition where you can choose your liquor and mix it yourself with soda and ice chips at whatever ratio at your table, and not having to bother ordering frequently.
