Austria is one of the best countries in Europe to go castle hopping. From medieval castles to grand old palaces, the country has many castles standing tall and proud, and most of them are rather well preserved. Many castles house museums, where the stately rooms and fine artworks will give you an idea of the opulent lifestyle of Austrian royalty. One of the most impressive castles is Festung Hohensalzburg, or the Salzburg Fortress, which looms large over the city and can be seen from most vantage points in Salzburg. It is Europe’s largest preserved fortress, and it remained unconquered all through its long history (built in 1077). It can be easily reached by a funicular railway. Don’t miss the grandly furnished Golden Chamber or the quirky Marionette Museum inside the fortress. On the outskirts of Salzburg stands Schloss Hellbrunn or Hellbrunn Palace, a 17th-century Baroque villa known for its trick fountains and splendid gardens. Be prepared to get hosed by water jetting out from bushes, stones and other unexpected places! Another stunning castle is Schloss Ambras, a Renaissance palace that overlooks Innsbruck. The 43 metre long Spanish Hall, with its intricately inlaid wooden ceiling depicting 27 full-length portraits of Tyrol rulers, is a must-see.
