“There’s thrill in the unknown”
Travel plan I’m an extremely last-minute traveller; I’d like to blame that on how absolutely chaotic life has been through university, and now, the constantly changing schedules as an actor. But that’s not the only reason why I’m a last minute traveller – it’s how I like it. I’ve never done a classic touristy trip, and there’s always been some special element about every experience. There’s a thrill in the unknown for sure.
Food while travelling Every moment for me is a foodie moment as a traveller. I’ve always, without any shame, guilt or doubt, planned the places I want to go to based on food. But I think the one I just cannot forget, would be the classic egg fried rice, a Bhutanese breakfast staple, served hot and fresh in that biting cold, when I went on a visit to a school in Bhutan, in a village called Pangbisa. It’s never just about the dish, it always becomes the entire experience around it and how that lingers on as a memory.
Must-pack items Completely depends on the kind of trip it is – a trek, a relaxed holiday, a celebration with friends. But regardless of that, pack a lot of sunscreen, a pair of shoes that allows you to walk as much as you want to. Look for great denims, and a bag that helps you organise all your documents and money.
Travel lesson you have learnt I desperately need to travel light. I carry three times the clothes I need, and they usually come back untouched because I also shopping at the destination – regardless of how much I try to avoid it.
Travel gear If you are venturing towards a sea, a really nice swimsuit, a pair of shorts and a crisp white shirt. If the mountains, or for a trek, the sturdiest pair of shoes, a really hefty jacket that looks great too, and a pair of gloves.
Travel goals I stopped drawing up a grand list about two years ago, mostly because you constantly feel you’re not matching up to what you want. My approach now is to create short-term travel goals, achieve them, and hopefully, look back a decade later and feel great about it. Our country, especially the corners I haven’t touched, top my list. Next, it should be Prague, Sevilla, Santorini and Cape Town.
Travel pet peeves Local taxi or transport guys trying to fleece you, or taking you to the ‘best’ restaurant in the city because they can get a commission there.
