Don’t be fooled by the name—Dover Street Market isn’t really a street market, and it definitely doesn’t cater to bargain-hunters and high street shoppers. Taking the concept of a department store to a whole other level, Dover Street Market combines the vibe of a buzzing street market with a snooty, design-heavy atmosphere. The brainchild of designer Rei Kawakubo (of Comme des Garcons fame), everything about the space is avant garde. The minimalist interiors—think portacabins, exposed beams and brick walls—serve as a blank canvas for designers to display their collections, a central atrium serves as the focal point for shoppers, and the store closes to update its collections twice a year to keep pace with evolving trends. Once you’ve traversed the vast expanse, reward yourself with something sweet from Rose Bakery located on the top floor.
