Right on the outskirts of the present-day Jogja lies Kota Gede, a colonial settlement. This cultural hub has a few structures of the erstwhile 15th century capital town of the Mataram Dynasty. The entire area came under the Dutch reign and even now you can see a few colonial style houses. Walk down the old lanes, visit the royal cemetery, soak in a bit of history and visit the old markets. This is also the place to buy silver jewellery or to learn to make one and take back home as souvenir. Jogja is the place to purchase batik and there are several shops where you can buy it. Spend some time in a batik museum and learn the craft as well.
