Delhi will host its first monsoon festival at the Jahaz Mahal in Mehrauli area of South Delhi. The festival will last for three days between August 30 and September 1 during which people from the NCR region along with outstation tourists will get exposure to the culture and food of Delhi.
Manisha Saxena, Secretary, Delhi Tourism, told the press that they have sought assistance from Sahitya Kala Parishad for organising the festival, and artists will be invited for cultural performances. Meanwhile, the tourism department is in the process of finalising programme details and schedule.
Mehrauli is one of the most noteworthy and prominent sites of Delhi. When the Mughals reigned in Delhi, they visited Mehrauli during the monsoon to enjoy the season whilst staying around its mango orchards, stepwells, and gardens. Even famous monuments of the capital such as the Qutub Minar lie within the here in Mehrauli. The Mehrauli Archaeological Park has more than 100 historical structures dating back to more than 1000 years. The tombs of Jamali-Kamali, Adham Khan, and Balban are located in Mehrauli. The village of Mehrauli also houses the very ancient Yogmaya Temple which is a siddha peeth.
