Battery Park, just a few blocks from where the World Trade Center once stood takes its name from the artillery batteries that once protected New York Harbor. Fritz Koenigs sculpture ‘The Sphere’ which was damaged in fallout of 9/11 now stands, battered, as a memorial to the victims of the attacks. Other notable features of the park include a WW II memorial and a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Korean war. Looking out towards the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park really feels removed from the rush of Manhattan; there is a sense of a common respect for the events of the past.
