Hike a volcano

Iceland is one of the few countries where you can hike on a volcano. One of our favourite hikes is in the rugged Porsmork Valley. This is the site of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010. The region is dotted with glacial rivers, glaciers, lava fields, and canyons. In the middle of it all are the Fimmvörðuháls volcanoes. The hike is approximately 15 km long and can take up to eight hours to complete. The highlight is being able to touch newly-formed craters and lava from the 2010 eruption.
If you want something more mainstream, consider hiking up Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most famous active volcano. Its last eruption was as recent as February 2000, so this is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. This hike is moderately challenging and can take up to nine hours to complete. The views of the surrounding mountains and the Vatnajökull glacier from the top are unparalleled. We recommend going with a tour company as the chances of earthquakes and potential volcanic eruptions are high in this area. If hiking on a volcano doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can also go caving inside a volcano. A number of companies in Reykjavik offer tours that allow tourists to enter lava tubes and the magma chamber of extinct volcanoes to observe the patterns made by rocks when a volcano bursts.
