The whirling dervishes are part of a Sufi order in Konya, founded by famous Persian poet Rumi. The dervishes belonging to the Mevlevi Order practice whirling in remembrance of God. The whirling dance and musical ceremony is a spiritual practise. Through whirling they ascend into a higher realm of love and grace and reach closer to God. The dervishes in their traditional white gown, whirling on one foot is quite captivating. The Hodjapasha Cultural Centre in Istanbul hosts regular shows in its 15th century building, which used to serve as a hammam in earlier days. Watching whirling dervishes is a great way to enjoy a cultural evening in Istanbul. The show lasts for one and half hour where you get to see dervishes spinning in a choreographed motion accompanied by traditional Turkish music and Persian chanting. Sip over Turkish tea or coffee and end the evening with a traditional Turkish meal. Witnessing the ancient spiritual practise in a historical surrounding will leave lifelong impressions. Do remember to book in advance as these shows are quite popular and seats get filled quickly.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
