Jim Corbett National Park

The principle reason of all tourists who flock to Ramnagar is Jim Corbett National Park. All other attractions and activities are secondary. Named after the famous hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, this park was earlier known as Hailey National Park. It was from here that the now successful ‘Project Tiger’ (the tiger conservation programme) was initiated, and today these very tigers have become the primary attraction for visitors. Tourists to this park crave for a glimpse of this majestic animal and many come back again and again to behold its sight. However, the royal animal is pretty elusive and doesn’t grant everyone an appearance. Tiger sighting is essentially a matter of luck, but the other animals and bird species keep up the spirit of the visitors high during safari. This includes spotted deer, monkeys, langurs, elephants, jackals, monitor lizard, kingfishers, great hornbills, leopards and more. The landscape of Corbett National Park is beautiful and a jeep safari early in the morning (especially in early winters) is a wonderful experience. Apart from these majestic animals and the serene landscape, you could also enjoy watching things like termite’s nest and the nest of Indian weaver bird.
Safaris are conducted twice a day and permits are required to enter the park. There are different tourism zones, and permits are issued for safari in a particular zone only. A guide/naturalist, other than the driver accompanies tourists inside the park and is quiet helpful in spotting animals and birds which otherwise can be missed by the visitors. Do carry binoculars, as without these animals at a distance will be difficult to spot.
