Dubrovnik is surrounded by many islands. Situated just less than a kilometre away from the old town of Dubrovnik, the Island of Lokrum is the easiest one to visit. The island is accessible by a short ferry ride, but the best way to visit the island is to take a kayak and splash into the Adriatic waters. There are many group tour operators around the city who can help you organise an excursion to Lokrum. Previous kayak experience is not necessary to embark on this journey. Kayaking to Lokrum is the best way to feel the pulse of Adriatic Sea, while the return journey gives an opportunity to marvel Dubrovnik’s famous city walls from the maritime perspective. The less than one-mile-wide island of Lokrum contains important historical sights such as the 10th century Benedictine monastery and remains of Fort Royal Castle. Walk around the nature reserve or soak up the sun on a pristine beach, kayaking to Lokrum is an exhilarating experience. You will be reminded of scenes from ‘Game of Thrones’ all the time.
