Toronto's Harbourfront Centre celebrates the city and its location on one of the great lakes, Lake Ontario. For about 40 years, Toronto's waterfront has been actively developed as a cultural and recreational destination for locals and tourists to enjoy. Parklands, music amphitheatres, markets, cafes, hotels, condos, and shops line the city's downtown waterfront, making it attractive and accessible to visitors. In the winter, there's an outdoor skating rink and indoor exhibition and performance spaces; in the summer the area comes alive with festivals and special events. From the ferry docks at Harbourfront, you can take one of Toronto's iconic ferries to one of three stops on the Toronto Islands: Ward's Island, Centre Island or Hanlan's Point. Once there, you can walk, bike or roller blade from one end of the islands to the other, on flat, car-free trails. The Toronto Islands are a great way to spend a warm summer day. There's an amusement park and petting farm for kids, picnic areas, snack bars, canoe rentals, several beaches, a disc golf (frisbee) course and much more. From the Islands, you get a great view of the Toronto skyline, especially at sunset.
