On the eastern edge of downtown Toronto, the historic Distillery District is one of the city's most popular destinations for fun, food and frolic. Once a neglected clutch of aging booze factories, surrounded by an urban wasteland, the area has been completely renewed. The cobblestone streets now ring with music and laughter as tourists and locals alike soak up the Victorian-era atmosphere. There's always something going on, from morning until late at night, from a busker (street performer) festival to live music. In the summer, especially, the pedestrian-only streets are filled with people milling about the art galleries, performance spaces, shops and many bars, cafes and restaurants. It's a unique place that specialises in the unique. Restaurants serve locavore food, shops sell one-of-a-kind pieces created by local artisans and bars serve craft beer. This is the place to taste the truly local art and produce of the craftily creative denizens of Toronto.
