Who doesn’t love snuggling up on a rainy and watching a film! But what if you’re on a holiday and should be out and about seeing the historical landmarks? How about combining the two into one? The Castro Theatre is officially listed as number 100 of San Francisco’s historical landmarks. The theatre, originally constructed by the Nasser brothers in 1922, is a beautiful testament to the Spanish baroque influence and has a face like a Mexican cathedral. This theatre is one of the only cinemas from the 1920s that is still up and running as a theatre. The bright lights and big “CASTRO” sign out the front light up the street and beckon you in—especially on a miserable rainy day. The old world glamour of the theatre really brings a sense of occasion to every visit.
The cinema now shows classic films such as ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ and Woody Allen’s ‘Annie Hall’. They also have “sing along” nights, where they play musicals and guests are invited to jump in and sing along to the movie’s music. Movies like ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ are very popular and sure to have the audience singing in their seats and dancing in the aisles!
Tickets are $12 (Adults) and $9 (seniors and children) and there are plenty of snacks and drinks available at the canteen as you enter.
