Undoubtedly the most easily recognised shopping district in Kathmandu, Thamel is a hotspot for travellers who love to go shopping during a vacation. Apart from numerous hotels and lodges, one can locate rows of tiny shops along the alleys of Thamel. This is perhaps the best place to buy trekking gear in the city so one can expect hordes of trekkers collecting tools here. Due to the subtle hippie culture predominance in the area, Thamel is also known for designer clothes that are comfortable and stylish at the same time. Apart from these you can shop for casual tees, jeans, artifacts, music CDs, bags and other utility staff. For souvenirs one can collect khukris (a traditional Nepalese knife), thangka (a rare painting) and pashmina shawls. Be ready to bargain a lot because that will ensure a good deal for you!
