The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’s leading art museums. Established in 1871, it is located within beautiful parklands overlooking Sydney Harbour, and is only 15 minutes walk from the city centre. Over one million visitors annually enjoy the Gallery’s most encyclopaedic collection of Australian, Aboriginal, European, Asian and contemporary art. Alongside permanent collections is regularly changing temporary exhibitions – more than 30 each year – including flagship annual exhibitions such as the Archibald, Wynne, and Sulman Prizes, and Artexpress. Modern and contemporary works are displayed in expansive, light-filled spaces, offering stunning views of Sydney and the harbour. The splendid Grand Courts on the other hand are home to a distinguished collection of colonial and 19th-century Australian works and European masters such as Picasso, Bacon, Van Gogh, Bronzino, Burne-Jones, Canaletto, Claude, Constable, Delacroix, Lord Leighton, Reynolds and Rubens. There are also dedicated galleries celebrating the arts of Asia, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander art. As one of the most popular art museums in Australia, the Gallery is far more than just a destination for looking at pictures. It’s also a place to enjoy lectures and symposia, films, music, and performances. Admission to the Gallery is free, as their permanent galleries and most exhibitions and events.
