In 1919 Morris Shumiatcher opened the business after borrowing $300 from the bank and soon gained the reputation for being the best hat makers in the city. In 1946 he decided to do something a little different and he created the first ever white cowboy hat. Read less

There is a lot of history behind Smithbilt Hats and it is important to understand why this is a must visit for the perfect cowboy hat, as these folks here changed history. In 1919 Morris Shumiatcher opened the business after borrowing $300 from the bank and soon gained the reputation for being the best hat makers in the city. In 1946 he decided to do something a little different and he created the first ever white cowboy hat. If you know nothing about the white cowboy hat know this; it is the symbol of the Calgary Stampede and the City of Calgary now. How this happened was in 1949 the mayor of Calgary started handing out these white to visiting dignitaries and started wearing one himself. The hats took off and still today this tradition continues. Today visitors can visit both the store and the factory which is located in Inglewood where groups can get a tour of the working factory. Shoppers can also choose their hat from the instore selection of have one handcrafted at the factory. Either way, you’ll be getting one of the best made cowboy hats in history.
