Bannerghatta Biological Park introduces leopard safari and afforestation efforts

Visitors to the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) can now enjoy a new Leopard safari and purchase saplings at discounted rates, thanks to an innovative initiative that combines eco-tourism with afforestation efforts.
The leopard safari, spanning 20 hectares of deciduous forest, is designed to offer a safe and natural habitat for both animals and visitors. It includes several protective measures, such as a railway barricade, a 4.5-meter-high chain-link fence, and 1.5-meter metal sheets installed at a 30-degree angle. These safety precautions adhere to the central zoo authority's guidelines, ensuring a secure environment for the leopards and a safe viewing experience for visitors. This part of the park currently houses eight leopards, providing a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent big cats in their natural setting.

Bannerghatta Biological Park, located in Bengaluru, stands out as the first of its kind in South India and the largest in the country. Its hilly terrain and lush greenery have naturally attracted leopards over the years. Park officials frequently rescue leopard cubs from nearby farmlands, bolstering the park's leopard population. Presently, the BBP rescue center houses 14 leopards, highlighting the park's significant role in wildlife conservation.

Besides the safari, BBP authorities are urging visitors to engage in afforestation efforts by providing saplings at discounted rates. This initiative seeks to promote awareness of biodiversity, the significance of forests, and ecological balance. Karnataka Environment and Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre highlighted the educational value of this initiative.


The park recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to begin the construction of a skywalk and five new animal enclosures. The skywalk is planned to connect the zoo with the butterfly park, offering visitors a closer view of the tree canopy and birdlife, thus enhancing their appreciation of the park's ecosystem.

This comprehensive approach by the BBP aims to create an enriching and educational experience for visitors while promoting environmental conservation and awareness. By blending eco-tourism with proactive conservation efforts, the BBP is setting a benchmark for wildlife parks globally.
